I was very surprised when an acquaintance came up to Lisa the other day and said, “I saw your picture in a magazine!” We were both shocked. We knew of the Builder Broker Journal and of the Raleigh Ledger but did not know anything about any other publication that picked up on our Press Release in November/December. Apparently there were several. I have attached the ones we know about. I hope there are more we don’t know about circulating out there, generating business for us.

Our marketing firm MMI was able to acquire an interview with a writer for Builder Broker Journal. Its a trade journal for the building industry. The writer had interviewed us via the telephone before the holiday and it really was a blast doing the interview. Both Lisa and I have crazy schedules on a regular basis, plus the added insanity of the holiday preparation, we could only meet with her on the phone. We bantered back-and-forth, in our usual conversation, talking like a long lost friend on the speaker phone with Kristi. The end result was an article of 700+ words. We felt it really captured what Your Door & More is all about. The paper is published monthly and we were in the January edition.

I was hoping for a larger audience but it really was better it was smaller (10 people). Apparently many people were still out of town or busy after the holidays. It all turned out fine! I was able to make a 15 minute presentation and showed my portfolio.

In preparation for this I also updated the portfolio. I had not added the past 4 jobs nor had I added any of the floor plans. Lisa had done a bang up job at getting it initially set up, I just got it back up to speed.

When I started the presentation I focused a few moments on emotions. I passed out paper and pencil asking the group to draw the emotions of joy, sorrow, exhilaration and of nostalgia. After they did their little sketches, I said, “Your Door and More can draw emotions! I can draw a picture of a new home and show the joy of a first-time homeowner. I can draw a picture of a home and share the the pure nervous exhilaration of moving to a new location for a job, hoping things work out.  I can draw a picture of a home and share the nostalgia of a home you remember visiting as a young child. I can draw a home and share the sorrow of having to sell your again parents home. All these emotions are what I can draw!

I am really excited to share this opportunity with this group of local business people. In 30 seconds, its really hard to show what we do, but I really look forward to showcasing my work!

It has been a great start of our new venture. We would like to thank all those who have been instrumental in our start.

Our first thanks go to our husbands. They are on the front line every day when we are cranky or frustrated; they offer support and unconditional love. Our children, Abby, Maggie and Ella, we will often have them be quiet while we make one more phone call or just do one final revision on the computer. They are patient and always understand this phrase, “just give me a minute, please.”

To our people at MMI Marketing, Patty has given us the ability to reach so many more people and to freely give of her timeless experience. Kate 1 and Kate 2 are on the forefront with the daily work and endless emails. We look forward to whatever Patty has up her sleeve for 2008.

We are also so blessed to have each other’s friendship, for if it had not been for that, we would have never in business.
